The City of Surabaya

SURABAYA

/ a historical-yet-vibrant city where you can find the spirit and guyubness of its people — refers to a concept of communal harmony, unity, and togetherness, essentially meaning a sense of shared joy and support within a community where people live in peace and cooperate with one another /

Surabaya, the second-largest city in Indonesia and also the capital city of East Java province,  is a bustling urban hub known as the “City of Heroes.” This title commemorates its vital role in Indonesia’s struggle for independence, which is celebrated annually on Heroes’ Day. The city is a harmonious blend of historical landmarks and modern infrastructure, offering tourists a glimpse into its rich history while embracing contemporary lifestyles.

The name Surabaya comes from the Javanese phrase “sura ing baya“, which means “bravely facing danger”. The words “sura” and “baya” are derived from the Pali words “sura” and “bhaya“. The name Surabaya is also associated with a local myth about a fight between a shark (Suro) and a crocodile (Boyo). The myth is said to have inspired the Sura and Baya monument, logo, mascot and statue across the city.

A must-visit in Surabaya is the iconic Tugu Pahlawan (Heroes Monument), a symbol of the city’s resilience and bravery. Visitors can also explore the House of Sampoerna, a museum showcasing the art of traditional clove cigarette-making and Javanese heritage.

The culinary scene in Surabaya is an adventure in itself. The city is famous for its authentic East Javanese dishes such as rawon (beef soup with black nut broth), lontong balap (rice cake and tofu dish), and rujak cingur (a unique salad with a rich peanut sauce). Food lovers will find endless options to satisfy their cravings, from street-side stalls to upscale restaurants.

Surabaya is also a gateway to some of East Java’s most breathtaking destinations, such as Mount Bromo and Madura Island. With its blend of historical charm, culinary treasures, and easy access to nature, Surabaya offers an unforgettable experience for every traveler. Whether you’re seeking cultural exploration or modern indulgence, this dynamic city has it all.
